CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE QUALIFIERS

– Guyana’s First Match Is Scheduled For September 2018

7th March, 2018, Georgetown: Guyana has been matched against Barbados, Turks and Caicos Islands, French Guiana and Belize in the draw of the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) League of Nations qualifiers scheduled for the 2018 – 2019 period.

Guyana will play host to Barbados and Belize in September 2018 and March 2019 respectively in the first and final qualifier while Turks and Caicos Islands and French Guiana will host Guyana in October and November 2018.

Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Ian Greenwood, said the tournament will provide a platform for consistent and competitive football to further develop the standard of play in Guyana: “It was a positive and competitive draw for the Golden Jaguars. We feel we have the ability to perform against each opposition. We’re excited about our tough visit to French Guiana but feel we have the players to rise to this occasion and come out on top. Belize should be an interesting game but with home advantage and the support of a packed stadium, that will help us over the line. The launch of the Concacaf Nations League opens a consistent level of competition to further develop the standard of international football in the region.”

The matches will be played in the official FIFA window in September, October and November of 2018-2019 with the championship final scheduled for March 2020. It will feature promotion and relegation among the 34 participating teams and serve as a qualifier for the expanded Concacaf Gold Cup, scheduled for 2019.

According to Concacaf president Victor Montagliani, “The Nations League assures that all our members will have the opportunity to play more and compete more, which in turn will propel greater development of the sport at every level.”
